Patanjali Yoga Sutra Study

Samavaya periodically offers an online in-depth study of Patajali Yoga Sutras. This course will carefully study all four padas, including correct chanting and lively ongoing discussion of Patanjali’s meaning based on various definitive commentaries.
Samadhi Pada
The first of four chapters in Patanjali Yoga Sutras, serving as the foundational text defining yoga as the cessation of mind fluctuations (chitta-vritti-nirodha) to achieve Samadhi, or meditative absorption and enlightenment. Samadhi Pada outlines the nature of consciousness, the mind’s obstacles, and the path to inner stillness through practice and detachment. It introduces the ultimate goal of yoga: a state of unity and pure self-realization, guiding practitioners toward profound integration with the Self.
Sadhana Pada
Explore Kriya Yoga and the Eight Limbs as a practical roadmap to overcome the Kesha’s and to purify the mind through effort, self-study and devotion.
Vibhuti Pada
The third chapter of Patanjali Yoga Sutras focuses on advanced Yogic practice or Samyama which lead to the attainment of Sindhis, not as goals but as by-products of focused practice used by yogis seeking deeper insight into reality and consciousness, guiding them away from attachment and toward liberation.
Kaivalya Pada
The fourth and final chapter of the Yoga Sutras, Kailvalya Pada focuses on ultimate liberation (Kaivalya) from suffering and the cycle of death and rebirth, realized when Purusha (pure consciousness) is discriminated from Prakriti (matter/mind). It explains how the mind’s karmic impressions dissolve, allowing the true Self to rest in it’s own nature, leading to absolute freedom and oneness with the Infinite.
